Environmental Human Performance Lab for athletes

Last year we introduced an exciting new facility to our estate - an environmental chamber.

The Environmental Human Performance Lab, also known as a climate chamber or environmental simulator, is located in St Leonard's Land. The Performance Lab opened in November however teaching officially began in January.

Working with the Institute for Sport, Physical Education & Health Sciences (ISPEHS) at Moray House School of Education and Sport, we have brought this advanced technology to the University of Edinburgh, allowing Sport Science students and academics to simulate environmental factors such as air quality, temperature and humidity.

The chamber which is six metres by five metres can replicate virtually any environment, allowing athletes to prepare for events across the globe and for students to understand the performance of athletes under varying conditions.

Peter Hughes, Architectural Technologist in the Small Projects and Minor Works team, led this project and said: "This was a very interesting project to provide a cutting-edge sport science facility. Due to the complexity of the chamber, the project is heavily serviced so George Muir, Design Manager and I worked closely with the supplier Sporting Edge, and our consultant Mechanical and Electrical design engineer Keith Taylor of Taylor Associates to find the best solution for difficult 2-tiered site conditions”.
