Smarter Workspaces aligns with key themes that support the University’s strategic priorities, including optimising the size of our estate, enhancing space utilisation, and improving the overall experience for both staff and students.

The following guiding principles underpin our approach to smarter workspaces: 

  • Foster a sense of community and teamwork within a hybrid working environment, with a strong emphasis on staff experience
  • Ensure efficient and effective use of all available spaces
  • Promote an equitable and accessible estate for everyone
  • Approach space, technology, and cultural shifts in a holistic and integrated way
  • Prioritise shared and collaborative spaces over individually assigned ones, encouraging knowledge exchange and connection
  • Develop shared neighbourhoods that include access to private areas where needed. 

These principles are grounded in data-driven analysis, evidence-based assessments, and smart workplace design. They need to be supported by robust change management, clear communication strategies, and, critically, the right IT infrastructure—without which these initiatives would not be possible.
