WEEE is waste electrical and electronic equipment. It is all end-of-life electrical and electronic equipment and covers virtually everything with a plug or battery. It is required to be collected via our licensed WEEE contractor (CCL North Ltd) and is illegal to dispose in any other way e.g. bins, skips, etc. Our WEEE contractor CCL North Ltd undertake software based data destruction for all types of data including: electronic media, hard drives, SSD devices, data tapes, CDs and memory sticks. They offer licensed software erasure, certified hard drive degaussing and physical destruction (for more information see the CCL North Ltd website: www.cclnorth.com/data-destruction). The WEEE contract was awarded to CCL North on 5 January 2022 for a period of 2 years with the option to extend for a further 2 years (1 year plus 1 year). Reusable?PotentiallyRecyclable?YesUplift required?Yes (via licensed contractor)Hazardous?PotentiallyCost?Yes (for fewer than 30 larger items e.g. computers, refrigerated items, lab equipment, etc). Maximum cost is £150 (plus VAT) but CCL North Ltd will consolidate collections as much as possible, and will pro-rata the cost between producers. If you have space, WEEE can be stored, but it must be stored internally and not left outside in the elements.Yes - refrigerated itemsFor fewer amounts of small items such as keyboards, cables, batteries, kitchen equipment, etc an assessment will be made if Waste and Furniture Management can collect and store this to consolidate into one collection (whilst covering the cost). If this is not possible, we will request a quote from CCL North Ltd, and there will be a cost associated with any collection. For any collections where there are larger items requiring more than one person to lift, a risk assessment will be carried out and a quote supplied dependant on the labour needed to safely collect the equipment. For any loads containing hazardous waste, CCL North Ltd would provide a Special Waste Consignment Note charged at £30.Is the item reusable? The Department for Social Responsibility and Sustainability (SRS) run a project to improve the capacity for reuse of PC desktops at the University; find out how old computers and other IT equipment can be reused on the SRS website. When you send a request to us, we will initially contact SRS to determine if the IT equipment is suitable for reuse.Process (non-refrigerated equipment)Segregate and count items (if equipment consists of multiple parts, e.g. lab equipment, label clearly to ease identification, e.g. 1 of 2, 2 of 2).Complete WEEE Collection Request Form and Decommissioning Checklist and email to Waste and Furniture Management at waste@ed.ac.uk to arrange an uplift. Waste and Furniture Management will then review the request, and will either arrange for collection by the Waste and Furniture Assistants (for fewer amounts of small items), or forward to CCL North Ltd to request a quote (or SRS if IT equipment is included). If a quote is required, CCL North Ltd will then make contact with a quote and a collection date (note someone must be available on the collection day to sign and verify the paperwork if CCL North Ltd is collecting the WEEE). The signed Waste Transfer Note provided at time of collection, plus the Special Waste Consignment note if hazardous wastes are present, must be kept for two years by your Department along with this form. Waste and Furniture Management will journal any costs using P&M codes provided.
